CCCES Inaugural Ceremony A Complete Success
The Chinese Canadian Civil Engineering Society (CCCES) had its inaugural ceremony in Markham on August 11, 2018. More than 200 Chinese-Canadian civil engineering professionals attended the celebration.
Mr. Jerry Che, President of CCCES, introduced the vision and mission of CCCES. He shared the background and history of the organization. Officially registered in Toronto, Canada on May 10, 2018, CCCES has the mission to create a professional platform for Chinese Canadian civil engineering professionals to exchange experience and promote personal career development. CCCES is also committed to promoting overall development and knowledge sharing among the Chinese civil engineering community. Over the past two months, the organization has been experiencing rapid growth. Currently, CCCES has 150 registered members and 450 Wechat group members. The organization has established cooperative partnerships with international sister institutions such as the Chinese American Civil Engineer Society. CCCES strives for openness and tolerance, and it warmly welcomes civil engineering professionals from various technical fields.
Mr. Frank Feng, Chairman of the Board of Chinese Canadian Civil Engineering Society introduced and welcomed honorable guests: Consul Baohua Yang and Consul Chenliang Song of the Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Toronto, City of Markham Ward 8 Councillor Alex Chiu, Ward 2 Councillor Alan Ho, Mr. Wei Ruan, Executive Director of the Zhejiang Chamber of Commerce in Canada, Mr. Will Sung, Executive President of Canadian Municipal Business Gateway (CMBG); and Mr. Philip Ho, Executive Vice-President of Canadian Municipal Business Gateway (CMBG).
Mr. Feng also introduced Board of Directors: President of Executive Team Jerry Che, Vice-Chair of the Board Wayne Song, Treasurer Damon Liu; Directors Mike Du, Margaret Ma, Haixue Liao, and Secretary Ying Zhou,
Consul Yang delivered a warm speech. He congratulated the establishment of CCCES. He hopes that the organization will continue to actively promote the academic exchange among Chinese Canadian civil engineering professionals and to enhance the development of the Canadian civil engineering technologies. He also hopes CCCES can facilitate cooperation between China and Canada in civil engineering in the future.
Councillor Alex Chiu and Councillor Alan Ho delivered speeches congratulating establishment of CCCES. They expressed that they are willing to support the work of the organization and hope that CCCES will contribute to the development of the Chinese community in Canada. They also presented autographed congratulatory letters to CCCES.
Mr. Wayne Song, Vice-Chair of CCCES, commended the three sponsors: Diamond Sponsor Frontop Engineering Ltd., Titanium Sponsor WPE Accounting Ltd., and Bronze Sponsor Vector Corossion Technologies. On behalf of CCCES, Mr. Song expressed his sincere gratitude to the sponsors for their generous donations, and invited Mr. Feng, Mr. Che, Councillor Chiu and Councillor Ho to present the sponsorship awards to Mr. Jon Zheng of Frontop Engineering Ltd. and Ms. Sherry Shen of WPE Accounting Ltd. The participants expressed their gratitude to the sponsors with much warm applause.
Jeff Gao, Executive Director of Internal Communication was the master of ceremonies. Michael Fan, Executive Director of Media, briefed the participants on the results of a recent questionnaire survey. Miranda Liu, Executive Director of Events, introduced the scheduled future events and activities of the organization and vacant positions for hiring. CCCES encourages young professionals to actively participate activities, and provide valuable recommendations on various communication platforms.
During networking time, Board Directors and the participants had interesting discussions in different groups including transportation planning, project management, construction, structural engineering, and estimating.
During the technical sessions, Mr. Chusheng He, senior Engineer, Associate Dean and Deputy Chief Engineer of Transportation Planning Institute of Southeast University Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd., presented the key technologies for the rehabilitation of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge and its approach double-curved arch bridges.
Mr. Haixue Liao, P.E., P.Eng., CP Specialist, presented cutting-edge Canadian concrete corrosion protection technologies by presenting project examples from around the world.
After the ceremony, the board of directors, the management team appreciated volunteers’ efforts and contributions. They thanked volunteers for contributing their time and thoughts in making the opening ceremony a success.
By organizing academic events and other networking activities, Canadian Chinese Civil Engineering Organization will strive to continue promoting knowledge exchange and experience sharing among domestic and international civil engineering professionals.
加拿大华人土木工程协会（Chinese Canadian Civil Engineering Society）成立庆典于2018年8月11日在加拿大万锦市（City of Markham）隆重举行。庆典大会吸引了众多华人土木专业人士，能容纳200人的会议厅里座无虚席。
协会理事会会长冯建德（Frank Feng）先生代表协会介绍并欢迎到会嘉宾：中国驻多伦多总领事馆杨葆华领事、宋晨亮领事、万锦市第八区市议员赵善光(Alex Chiu)先生，第二区市议员何胡景(Alan Ho)先生，加拿大浙江总商会执行董事阮伟先生、加拿大城際商務促進中心(CMBG)常务理事长 Will Sung先生和常务副理事长Philip Ho先生。冯会长随后介绍了其他理事会成员：行政总裁车尔迪（Jerry Che）先生、副会长宋炜（Wayne Song）先生、理事兼财务主管刘忠（Damon Liu），理事杜章军 (Mike Du)先生、马晓红（Margaret Ma）女士、廖海学（Haixue Liao）先生，以及理事会秘书周莹（Ying Zhou）女士。

Key Technologies in Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Double-Curved Arch Bridge Rehabilitation

(1) About Mr. Chusheng He
Chusheng He, born in June 1973. Mr. He graduated from Southeast University in 1995, majored in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering; and in 2005 obtained his master degree in Bridge and Tunnel Engineering. Mr. He is a senior Engineer, Associate Dean and Deputy Chief Engineer of Transportation Planning Institute of Southeast University Architects & Engineers Co., Ltd.. He has more than two-decade experience, focusing on Bridge Design and Study, and management, etc. Mr. He has led the engineering design of Longchuan Bridge in Jiangdu City; Long Xigang Bridge in Huzhou City; Hexing Bridge in Nanxun City; Quanhe Bridge on Nanjing Road, Fuyang City; Zhonghuan Express Road in Kunshan. He has achieved 14 awards in Nanjing City, 29 awards in Provincial, National Education Ministry and National Transportation Ministry combined, and 4 awards in national engineering and investigation industry. He has published more than 10 papers, 5 of which were filed by EI. He is the lead author of one book.
(2) Speech Abstract
Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is the first superb highway-Railway Bridge designed and constructed by China, it is a national pride and symbolizes a milestone of the era, which also carried the very unique national emotion of a generation. The Approach Span portion was constructed in the format of double curved arch bridge. Innovated by Chinese bridge builders based on conventional stone arch bridge, which saved not only materials but also time, the Bridge type was popular at the time and is very symbolic of the era. The rehabilitation of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge Road Portion has attracted enormous attention, and the rehabilitation of the Double curved Arch Bridge is an ordeal to the Project Designers. The Rehabilitation Project has stick to the primary principles of “Fix it as it is”, Which means while maintaining its structural and historical appearance features, the Project will restore and improve its capacity in a proper manner, and focus on improving its durability. Ten years of pre-construction study and planning, combined with two years of dedicated design, the engineering challenges for the Project are well resolved and the public attention is well fulfilled. The rehabilitation of the Double Curved Arch Bridge has proceeded more than a year so far, and is approaching close-out phase.

Liao Haixue, P.E., P.Eng., CP Specialist, is a professional engineer registered in New York, United States of America and Ontario, Canada. He is a qualified presenter for American National Council of Structural Engineers Associations, certified continuing education program, “Evaluation, Repair, Protection and Strengthening of Existing Concrete Structures”.
He is a NACE certified cathodic protection specialist, with extensive experience in reinforced concrete corrosion evaluation, mitigation and protection. He is also certified PTI (Post-Tensioning Institute) Level 2 Unbonded Post-Tensioning Inspector and ASBI (American Segmental Bridge Institute) Grouting Technician with 20 years experience in post-tensioning installation, evaluation and rehabilitation. He is a committee member of Post-Tensioning Institute CRT60, DC55 and DC80.
